Running until May 31, the 10th edition of annual charity initiative Ataya – organised by Emirates Red Crescent under the Patronage of HH Sheikha Shamsa Bint Hamd – pools an array of talented artists and designers from across the GCC to showcase an exquisite range of handcrafted pieces on the newly launched Ataya online shopping destination. 

Offering a selection of unique fashion, accessories, homeware, and food, Ataya has supported several life-changing initiatives over the past 10 years. This includes building schools and hospitals, empowering communities through giving access to education and healthcare, and even building a complete village for a community suffering from enormous upheavals. Through donations and exhibitor participation fees, this year’s initiative aims to offer 200 fully funded training grants for nurses from select universities in India, the Philippines, Egypt, Albania, Bosnia, Mauritania, and the UAE.

The fourth in a new series of chamber music concerts by the UAE Classical Talents and presented by Alliance Française Dubai in Oud Metha, ‘A Night in a French Salon’ begins with works from Debussy and Chopin performed by pianist Ioannis Potamousis before being joined on stage by a string quintet to offer the audience the full concerto for piano and orchestra No. 2 by Camille Saint-Saëns in its salon version. Classic Apple Pie

To make a classic apple pie, you’ll need:

Ingredients

  • 6-7 medium-sized apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work well)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 9-inch pie crust (homemade or store-bought)

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin wedges.
  3. In a large bowl, mix together the sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  4. Add the sliced apples to the bowl and toss until they are evenly coated with the sugar mixture.
  5. Roll out the pie crust and place it in a 9-inch pie dish.
  6. Pour the apple mixture into the pie crust and dot the top with small pieces of butter.
  7. Roll out the second pie crust and place it on top of the apples. Crimp the edges to seal the pie.
  8. Cut a few slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  9. Brush the top of the pie with the beaten egg.
  10. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  11. Let the pie cool for at least 30 minutes before serving.

  • 2 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 16 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 medium-sized apples, peeled and diced
  • 1/4 cup caramel sauce

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs, 1/4 cup sugar, and melted butter.
  3. Press the mixture into the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  4. In a separate bowl, beat the cream cheese and 1/2 cup sugar until smooth.
  5. Add in the eggs and vanilla extract, and beat until well combined.
  6. Pour the cream cheese mixture over the graham cracker crust.
  7. Sprinkle the diced apples over the top of the cream cheese mixture.
  8. Drizzle the caramel sauce over the apples.
  9. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the centre is set.
  10. Let the bars cool before slicing and serving.

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup apple cider
