If you’re feeling the effects of the recent festive excesses, your skin may be dull and fatigued. Now, more than ever, your skin is crying out for a good exfoliation and face mask. Detox your skin this new year and make sure to keep up the habit as part of your weekly skincare routine.
You should exfoliate your skin at least once a week – any more and you run the risk of damaging the delicate skin barrier, which will lead to angry, red skin. Removing dead skin cells promotes new skin cell growth, ensuring smooth and elastic skin. In general, here are two types of exfoliators to choose from: chemical and physical. Chemical exfoliators include ingredients like acids and enzymes, while physical exfoliators include scrubs, facial cleansing brushes and even the humble wash cloth. Chemical exfoliators are more gentle on skin and are ideal for dry, dehydrated, sensitive and acne-prone skins. Normal and combination skins can handle physical exfoliation better.
After exfoliating, it’s time to soothe the skin with a mask. If you have oily skin, opt for clay-based masks that will help absorb excess oil. Combination types will benefit from ingredients such as almond, oatmeal and honey, which exfoliate gently and help retain moisture. Dry skin types should seek out seaweed and hyaluronic acid-based masks and other super hydrating ingredients such as shea butter or cocoa. Apply onto freshly exfoliated skin that you’ve gently patted dry, kick back and enjoy! Follow with a hydrating moisturising cream and if you’re heading outside, slather on the sunscreen.
