Infuse Your Style With the Energy You Need

Meet the woman behind KimonoGirl.

If you’ve been keeping up with the latest trends, you may have noticed that energy fashion is having a moment. But what exactly is energy fashion? it’s is all about dressing in a way that supports your personal well-being. This trend is based on the belief that the clothes we wear impact our mood and vitality through energy.

When choosing energy fashion, comfort and functionality are key. The goal is to select clothing that makes you feel relaxed, confident, and free to move. Natural fabrics like silk, cotton, and linen are often favoured for their breathability and gentle feel. Bright colours and fun prints are also popular choices, as they can help energise and uplift the wearer.

One brand leading this new trend is KimonoGirl. Margeri Ottis, founder and CEO, is the woman behind the fashion brand. Margeri was born and raised in Estonia, and at the age of 10, she became interested in Buddhism after reading a book called Meditation for Children. As she grew older, she began to expand her knowledge of both spirituality and art. Adopting this open-minded approach to life allowed her to tap into her inner source of power.

Margeri’s journey began with a yearning for something more. After living with monks in a temple in Nepal and attending ayahuasca ceremonies, she felt called to explore her spiritual side. However, when she found herself at the top of the corporate ladder in London, she realised that the corporate world was not where her true passion lay.

For over a decade, she worked in sales and business development for some of the world’s biggest banks. In recent years, however, she became increasingly frustrated by the inequalities of the corporate world. Finally, heeding her inner calling, she left the corporate world behind and embarked on a journey of self-discovery where she found her true purpose.

When Margeri first came across a kimono, she was instantly captivated by its beauty, but it wasn’t until she began wearing them herself that she realised their true power. For Margeri, kimonos represent a unique form of feminine expression. They are a way for women to feel both powerful and beautiful.

In a world where women are often expected to conform to masculine standards, kimonos provide a refreshing alternative. That’s why she founded The KimonoGirl, an energy fashion brand dedicated to empowering women through wearing energy-infused kimonos. She launched the company in February 2022, developing it since July 2021.

We sat down with Margeri to find out what drives her passion for energy fashion and why kimonos are a girl’s new best friend and these are what we learned.

What prompted you to create a line of kimonos?

I feel like every day, we as women are faced with so many demands and expectations. We’re told we have to be perfect wives, mothers, daughters, employees… the list goes on. And it’s easy to feel like we’re not doing enough, or that we’re not good enough.

I wanted to create something that would help women remember their inner goddess — the part of them that is strong, powerful, and beautiful. Our kimonos are made with absolute integrity from exquisite fabrics. Each piece is individually created with incredibly skilled hands and blessed with love and gratitude. When you wear one of our kimonos, I hope you’ll feel like the goddess you are.

How will your kimonos help empower women?

As any woman knows, feeling good about yourself is not always easy. We all have days where we feel less than our best, and it can be tough to shake off that low energy. However, there is one easy way to help elevate your mood and feel great: by wearing energy fashion.

Energy fashion is designed to help boost your positive vibrational levels, so that you can feel more love, power, gratitude, inspiration, and worth. All you need to do is put on a kimono and let the positive energy flow!

What do you want to bring to the world through your brand?

Since we first launched our business, we’ve strived to continually improve our products and create even more value for our customers. We’ve evolved our energy-charging rituals to create even more powerful and elevated boosts of energy, and we’ve extended the range of mindfulness tools available through our fashion line.

Energy fashion has truly changed the landscape of the fashion industry, and we want to be known as the pioneers of this new style of fashion. Our most important features are our magical kimonos, which are infused with healing energy and high frequencies to balance and heal the wearer. Our mission is to provide women with the tools they need to live their best lives, and we’re grateful to be able to do that through our unique product line.

What do wearers say about their experience when they put on a KimonoGirl kimono?

They love the experience and the luxury. When you put on one of our kimonos, we want you to feel a shift in your energy field. Our kimonos are made with high quality materials and are charged with high frequency energy. This combination creates a kimono that is not only beautiful, but also elevates the wearer’s body and mood.

When you slip into one of our kimonos, we hope you feel a sense of joy, peace, and love. We believe that when you look good, you feel good — and we want nothing more than for our customers to feel their best. Our kimonos are meant to be enjoyed and cherished, and we hope they bring you as much happiness as they have us.

What values does KimonoGirl hold on to?

When it comes to our brand, the most important aspect for us is our WHY. KimonoGirl exists to provide a platform through beautiful energy-charged kimonos that will make you feel not only beautiful but also empowered and elevated.

We believe that every woman deserves to feel like a goddess, and our kimonos are designed to help you tap into your inner power. Our mission is to spread confidence and positivity through fashion, and we hope our kimonos can help you discover your unique beauty.

The right clothing can make you feel more like yourself and give you the boost of confidence you need to take on your day. That is what I want our kimonos to do for our customers. I want them to feel beautiful, strong, and feminine when they put on one of our kimonos.

We put a lot of time and energy into each one of our pieces to make sure they are not only aesthetically pleasing but also have good energy. I believe that what you wear should make you feel good not only about yourself but also about the world around you.

What’s your favourite KimonoGirl kimono?

I have to say that I absolutely love all four of the kimonos in our first collection. Each one has its own unique properties and powers, so it really depends on your mood as to which one you’ll choose for the day.

Earth Kimono: Earth is all about grounding, foundation, and substance. If you feel disconnected from your life path or like you’re not rooted in your identity, then earth energy may be what you need.

Air Kimono: Air represents intellect, mental intention, and connection to the universal life force. If you’re seeking clarity or struggling to find your place in the world, air energy can help you to see things from a higher perspective.

Water Kimono: Water is all about intuition, healing, and inner reflection. Water has long been accorded cleansing power and is regarded as the most powerful as well as the most life-sustaining element. If you’re in need of some emotional healing or regeneration, water energy can help.

Fire Kimono: Fire symbolises incredible energy and passion. Fire is the source of freedom and creativity. If you’re feeling stuck in a rut or like you’ve lost your spark, fire energy may be just what you need to get back on track.

No matter which kimono you choose to wear, you’ll feel like I’m embodying something special and powerful.

What has been most challenging about bringing KimonoGirl to the world?

I think the most challenging thing for me about explaining the kimonos to my customers is that we are creating a new concept in the fashion market. The phrase ‘energy fashion’ is something that people are not familiar with, so it is a challenge to communicate and educate people about it. People are comfortable with things they already know, so anything new — whether it is a product or a concept — is always questioned.

I try to be as friendly and patient as possible when explaining it to people so that they can understand what we are trying to do. Hopefully, once they see our products and how they can help them, they will be more open to the idea of energy fashion.

Kimonos are unique because they are specifically designed to work with your body’s energy. They are also versatile and can be worn for many different occasions. I believe that once people understand these things about our kimonos, they will be more interested in purchasing them.

Choosing your energy

We’re constantly surrounded by energy, and whether we realise it or not, that energy affects us in profound ways. That’s why it’s so important to surround ourselves with positive energy as much as possible — and that includes the clothes we wear.

When you wear clothing that have been created through a positive pathway of energy, it gives you the ability to tap into your own feminine divine — the part of you that is strong, beautiful, and capable of anything. It’s this connection to our feminine power that allows us to feel confident and unstoppable in the face of whatever life throws our way. And when we feel good about ourselves, we can show up fully in our lives and relationships and be the best versions of ourselves possible.

Every woman has the power to unlock and live her feminine divine. With Earth, Air, Water, and Fire Kimonos from Kimonogirl, you can express your unique personality while feeling magical, beautiful, empowered, and inspired. Made with love and positive vibrations, these kimonos will help you live your best life.

Talking Sustainabili-tea with Laura Erguy

The co-founder of Namastea on searching for some of the best tea in the world.

As tea consumption continues to rise, many brands are looking for ways to modernise the traditional beverage. With increasing populations plus disposable income and a penchant for the Instagrammable, a key driver behind increased tea consumption in the Middle East has been boba tea. But that doesn’t mean traditional tea is on the way out; the reality is quite the opposite: the Middle East and Africa are the world’s second-largest consumers of tea, after Asia Pacific, with black tea coming out as a strong preference, as well as teas geared towards health and wellness.

One such brand is Namastea, dedicated to providing the highest quality tea available to the Gulf region with an eye trained firmly on the future. “Tea is an old and traditional beverage with a lot of existing brands. Our main challenge is to modernise its consumption and educate our consumers on the different options out there,” says co-founder Laura Erguy. We spoke with Erguy to find out more.

Chasing the Premium

“We realised that most teas in the Middle East were often lower quality than what we could find elsewhere and consumers did not know the many benefits of tea,” shared Laura. “So, we decided to source the best teas and really put the focus on each blend[‘s] main ingredients to highlight their benefits on our wellbeing, while maintaining an affordable price and cute packaging.”

Aimed at young, health-conscious tea drinkers, Erguy is on a mission to provide a premium tea and promote a healthier lifestyle. “We would like our customers to appreciate our level of quality and feel part of a healthy community with our brand.”

And the effort shows through. Just as single-origin coffees tend to have a distinct, exotic taste that is bolder and more robust in comparison to blends, Erguy — who co-founded Namastea with her sister almost four years ago — revealed all Namastea teas are sourced exclusively from Sri Lanka, one of the world’s top producers of tea. “Sri Lanka is the only country in the world to function with an auction system that ensures that every single batch of tea produced is checked, ensuring consistency, transparency, and homogeneity of the products.”

“Sri Lanka is also the first and only country to have received a global ozone-friendly certification thanks to their sustainable production methods.”

The Power of Sustainability

Originally from France, the Erguy sisters founded Namastea out of a love for Sri Lanka and its tea, and a desire to share it with their world. “We both started our careers in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. After many trips to Sri Lanka, we discovered the incredible health benefits of tea and realised that this was often unknown or not fully understood. We decided to create a modern and colourful brand to modernise this ancient beverage, as well as focus on its incredible powers.”

The sailing distance from Sri Lanka to the Gulf region is usually between one to three days, meaning the tea’s footprint from food miles is drastically reduced too. “Our teas have not traveled the world before reaching your cup,” says Erguy. Apart from sourcing sustainably-produced tea, Namastea’s teabags are fully compostable and biodegradable; plus, all the flavours are 100% natural and fruit-based, with special limited editions as well as an ever-expanding lineup.

“We started with only loose leaf teas, but gradually introduced a teabag as well in order to cater supermarkets’ needs and [offer] more convenience for some of our consumers,” says Erguy. “Our favourite tea is Pretty Berry,” says Laura, “because it is a unique creation in our range that you would not find in any other brands. It has a very tasty flavour, almost like a candy (without the guilt) and can be drunk cold or hot.”

According to Erguy, the unique natural flavours added to the tea blends can last up to three years, though she recommends consuming the teas long before then. “The natural flavours added to the blend tend to disappear after that period. However, the tea itself does not expire and will still be safe to drink after three years.”

By providing consumers with the highest quality tea from Sri Lanka, Namastea is helping to modernise the traditional beverage and educate consumers on the different options available.

A Beginner’s Guide to Meditation at Home

Everything you need to successfully start meditating at home.

In our fast-paced, constantly-connected world, finding ways to relax and de-stress is more important than ever. We’re constantly bombarded with notifications, emails, and calls, and finding a moment of peace can be tough. That’s where meditation comes in.

If you’re new to meditation or have been meaning to start a regular practice but don’t know where to begin, this guide is for you. Meditation is a brief respite from the chaos of the world, a chance to clear your mind and just be.

The practice of meditation can take many forms, but the goal is always the same: to still the mind and achieve a state of relaxation. And the benefits are well worth the effort. Studies have shown that meditation can help to reduce stress and anxiety, improve sleep, and boost cognitive performance.

Getting Started with Meditation

One of the great things about meditation is that it can be done anywhere, anytime. That said, finding a space in your home that is quiet, comfortable, and free from distractions is important. If possible, try to find a room or area that you can dedicate solely to meditation; that way, whenever you enter that space, your mind will automatically begin to calm down and centre itself.

If you don’t have an entire room you can use for meditation, that’s perfectly fine — any quiet corner will do. Just make sure to remove any clutter or distractions from your chosen space before starting your session. You might also want to dim the lights or light some candles to create a peaceful atmosphere. Finally, sit comfortably on the floor or in a chair with your spine straight and your eyes closed. Once you’re settled in, you’re ready to begin meditating.

When it comes to forming new habits, one of the most important things is consistency. The same goes for meditation. To make meditation a part of your daily routine, aim to meditate at the same time each day. That could be first thing in the morning before starting your day, during your lunch break at work, or right before bedtime.

It’s also helpful to keep things simple in the beginning. Don’t try to meditate for hours on end; start with just five or 10 minutes of mindfulness each day. As you get more comfortable with the practice, you can gradually increase the length of your sessions.

Remember: the goal is not necessarily to reach some higher state of consciousness; simply being present and aware of your thoughts and surroundings is enough.

Isabella Goeres

In Conversation with Isabella Goeres

The founder of Saine talks health and healing.

In today’s world, it’s sometimes hard to focus on the things that make us feel good, but what if we could add a dose of wellness to our lives that would enrich us in ways we never thought possible? That’s where wellness comes in. Wellness is about taking care of yourself.

It’s about being in tune with your body and mind, and knowing what you need to be at your best. Wellness is about taking time for yourself and ensuring you have the energy to care for your family and friends. It’s knowing that you’re looking out for your mental health as much as your physical health. It’s about being present in your life and taking time every day to connect with yourself and those around you.

Because you’re a mere human, you need to treat yourself right. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life, but it’s essential to take time out for yourself to stay healthy and happy. And when it comes to maintaining your wellness routine, it’s crucial to ensure that your mind and body get the attention they deserve. Furthermore, there’s a lot we can do to improve our overall well-being. We can eat healthier, exercise more, and sleep better. But as necessary as those things are, there are also tools that can help us on our journey.

One such tool is the products by Saine, a wellness brand devoted to promoting wellbeing. It offers pure and natural products, bringing you closer to your roots. Developed over generations, it carries traditional wisdom in a modern, minimalistic aesthetic. It can be hard to take care of ourselves in our busy lives. We are constantly bombarded with messages telling us what we should be doing and buying, but often, we don’t have time for it all. That’s why Saine offers products that give back some of your time by making it easier for you to take care of yourself.

Conversation with Isabella Goeres

Isabella Goeres started Saine in April 2021 after moving to Dubai from her home country of Switzerland. She was used to working in the fashion industry, but as a nature lover, she missed her connection to nature in the transition. To help her reconnect with nature, she started practising yoga intensely and sewing products that would enhance her well-being, which soon became favourites among her friends and family.

After some time, Isabella decided to create Saine and give more people in Dubai the possibility of using natural wellness products in order to improve their wellbeing. Her vision is to reconnect people with nature through simple but effective products that make them feel good about themselves (and their surroundings). We sat down with Isabella, getting to know her better and tapping her insights as an entrepreneur.

What motivated you to pursue Saine?

At Saine, we believe in the power of natural ingredients to make people happier and feel better. Our products are pure and natural, bringing you closer to your roots. We’re proud to be able to provide such an essential service: helping people realise their potential and live a life they love.

We know that everyone has a dream, but so many of us never get around to realising it because we’re too busy taking care of everyone else. Our products are designed to help you take care of yourself for once – to ensure that you can give yourself what you need without feeling guilty about it!

What’s the inspiration behind Saine products?

I decided to create/sell this product because I believe that the healing power of nature is something that we need to pay more attention to. We are currently observing a trend towards natural products and healing techniques. People are more aware of how they can improve their health by eating healthier foods, living more consciously, and looking after themselves naturally.

Saine products support this lifestyle by offering what nature already provides us in a very stylish and minimalistic way. Our products are produced locally with only natural ingredients. And their wisdom has been passed down from generation to generation. This is what I wanted to create: traditional healing in a state-of-the-art and eco-friendly way.

bottles of essential oils

How do Saine products enrich the lives of its users?

Saine products are made from the purest of materials, each to help you in your own way. Though different, they all share the same values: natural ingredients, wisdom, and durability. Saine products can be used for years because everything is washable, and the fabrics and colours are carefully chosen for their high quality.

Our essential oils and sprays are crafted safe for your skin and the environment. The result of all this hard work is a product that promotes wellness because it makes you feel close to nature, giving you a greater sense of connection with your roots and traditions.

What is your vision of success?

In my business, success is when people come back to me saying that they love my products for different reasons. And that my products are making a difference in their lives. This is what I strive for every day. My goal is to make sure that every person who uses my product feels like they’re getting the best care possible and that they have access to quality products at affordable prices. I want my customers to know that what they buy from me will be worth it.

How does Saine stand out from the crowd?

What makes Saine different is our commitment to purity and natural ingredients. Our products are free from harsh chemicals and synthetic fragrances, so you can feel good about using them. In addition, we only use sustainable and ethically sourced ingredients, so you can be sure that your purchase supports a responsible business.

Saine has the power to help you live a better life by giving you a hand with your health and well-being needs. We are committed to providing quality products that support your wellness. We believe that when you feel good physically, mentally, and spiritually, you can achieve anything! The Saine product concept was relatively unknown in Dubai when it started. It’s a new product range that customers here have yet to experience fully.

gift set of wellness products

What does wellness mean to you?

Wellness is the state of being happy, healthy, and functioning at your best. When we have a positive outlook on life, we feel better. When we feel good about ourselves, we tend to be more productive and efficient in our everyday lives. When you are healthy and happy, you can enjoy all aspects of life more fully.

You can focus on your work without feeling sick or tired all the time. You will have more energy for socialising with friends and family members without having to make excuses for not wanting to go out because you’re too tired from working hard during the day. We know that feeling good is the best way to live. And with wellness tools like Saine products, we’ll be on our way to feeling better than ever.

Building a Winter Capsule Wardrobe

Your Capsule Wardrobe for Winter Starts Here

Travel in style this season.

If you’re getting ready to take in the sights and sounds of a destination on your bucket list, procuring a travel capsule wardrobe for winter can definitely help alleviate some of the packing stress when it comes to your closet. Here’s my checklist with a few suggestions on how to build your own without breaking the bank.

Final Destination

First, let’s consider if and where you are travelling. It’s always best to check the weather ahead of time in order to prepare. A rule of thumb: remember all winters are not created equal. Will you need a parka or a pair of shorts? Does it require layering or will a cute top and bottom fit the bill? Don’t be afraid to do a little Google search to glance at the forecast.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T: Also, in doing your research about the weather, it’s nice to be considerate of local cultures and customs as it pertains to dress code. Planning to visit us here in the UAE or making a trip to another Muslim country? Grab a gorgeous abaya. This staple is an integral part of their cultural garb and many brands create them in an array of styles, so why not find one in your favorite colour to style? For instance, check out the affordable Omani abaya brand NB Design on Boksha for inspiration.

Abaya design by Boksha

NB Design Abaya, Boksha

How to Style: Throw it on as a duster and make it multi-purpose as another warm layer.

Bottoms Up

Consider your agenda. Does it call for complete comfort as you backpack through the cold of the Swiss Alps? Or are you just kicking it with family? Maybe you’re fine/casual dining in cute little cafés and making visits to amazing museums?

Destination Denim: If you’re in need of a pair of trousers, go with denim in a medium and dark wash as they can easily be paired with a T-shirt or button down. Grab a basic black pair as well – it can transition from day to night with top, heels, or boots. I personally prefer the Levi’s 312 Shaping Slim fit available in all three of the aforementioned colours.

 three woman standing

Denim Bottoms, Levi’s

a women wearing a coat

Coat Dress, House of Devereaux

woman wearing a white shirt dress

Shirt Dress, Namshi

How to Style: Each pair of denim comes in several lengths and inseams to ensure great fit as well as shaping technology, creating eye-catching curves. Pair them with a great outer layer like the Luna coat and a white shirt dress from Levi’s for a playful yet polished look along with footwear of your choice. If it’s a bit warmer, you may even opt to wear the shirt dress solo (as seen in the photo) along with light scarf.

Dressed to Impress

Nothing beats a basic dress that you can wear in a multitude of ways, making it the perfect piece for a winter travel capsule wardrobe. Again, with weather considered, grab two dresses that can be worn casually but also dressed up for a nice dinner when needed.

When in Doubt, Wrap It Out: And what does that mean? Go for the amazing multipurpose wrap dress that’s known to accent every woman’s figure. Not only can the wrap dress be worn as a singular item for warmer temps, but also layered as a duster. And if it’s extra cold, then throw a cute top on underneath and a great pair of boots, and go. Check out this Ella wrap dress from Namshi in a winter shade of wine that looks great on just about any skin tone.

Lean on the LBD: We all know the power of the famous little black dress and its influence on fashion and style. Not only is it one of the best staples and in a colour known to provide warmth, but it’s also a no-brainer for your winter travel capsule wardrobe. These two black dresses from Mango definitely make the cut. First, we have the pleated ruffle dress that gives you the illusion of the wrap dress pulling in at the waist, creating a great shape, but also the comfort and style of the LBD. Then there is the simplicity of the Maggie black dress that can be dressed up or down with heels, boots, or even sneakers and your go-to travel sweater.

Over and Out

Your outer layers matter just as much as your inner when it comes to proper planning and packing. I suggest at least two or three great tops to pair with your bottoms and even layer over your dresses, dependent upon your destination. Let’s not forget a great lightweight sweater or even overcoat if you anticipate an Arctic kind of cold.

Top Shop: A great white blouse is forever in style, no matter where you’re going. It can be worn alone or as an additional layer as well as with your staple T-shirts and cardigans in a neutral or fun print.

How to Style: Layer, layer, layer. And if it gets a bit warmer later in the day, then just tie it over your shoulders. Did I mention the T-shirts come in a tri-pack so you can switch out for whatever colour you wish?

The Cover Up: Keep in mind the weather as well as the weight of your luggage. Go for pieces that are easily to layer, but also to remove. One good quality coat to cover up should do. Want a dash of colour? Have a bit of fun with the double-breasted green coat from Zara, especially if all of your under layers are muted neutrals. If rocking full on neutrals rings your bell, then you’ll like the aforementioned Luna or even the Lumiere from House of Devereaux; both can be custom made to fit flawlessly.

How to Style: These overcoats work with just about every look, be it casual or evening. Layer away and don’t forget your scarf, if need be.

Bag It Up

When it comes to your bags, it’s not enough to consider what bags you will carry around town, but also your luggage. I highly recommend hard-shell luggage with expandable compartments because your items will be tumbled around the airport. Such suitcases not only decrease the likelihood of damage, but can also withstand being held in wet weather on the airport tarmac (trust me, I’ve seen it firsthand).

At a Crossroads: Can’t quite figure out what everyday bag to carry? When it comes to travelling, a convertible crossbody is always your friend. Find one with a strap that can be shortened or removed all together, transforming your bag into a beautiful clutch. You should also consider the size of the bag. Are you someone whose bag is always bursting at the seams? Then make sure your crossbody comes with enough compartments inside to organise all the extra stuff, like the Coach Bandit found at Bloomingdale’s.

Handbag, Bloomingdales

How to Style: Making a very cool comeback after some clever rebranding, Coach’s Bandit adjustable crossbody features a clean aesthetic that can easily shift from day to night and plenty of compartment space if needed. Keep its strap long during the day for outside excursions, and then shorten or remove it for hand carrying when headed out to dinner.

All Accessories

A simple outfit can be taken to new heights with the right accessories. When it comes to completing your winter capsule, your personal style comes into play by amplifying a simple outfit with small add-ons. Are you a minimalist or do you prefer statement-making pieces? It’s all up to you – just be aware of how much you choose to pack.

Pick with Purpose: Like footwear, it’s important to lay your looks out before packing and begin to pair accessory pieces that are versatile and complement your looks. Never underestimate a great pair of hoops in either silver or gold, as well as a great watch or classic coordinating bracelet. Do you have a no-fail necklace? You know that one necklace you feel goes with everything? Well, don’t forget to pack that as well as two more neck pieces that speak to your personality, but again, go with other looks.

How to Style: Can’t quite decide between silver and gold? Then go for both with Aqua’s double hoops. You can also be on trend with the initial necklace from Kendra Scott available in both silver and gold.

Next Level Layer: Never underestimate the versatility of a scarf. As a lightweight layer that can also save weight in your luggage, this Crerra scarf in a neutral black and brown is a cute accent.

Scarf, Namshi

How to Style: Loop around your neck in the classic way and, as it gets warmer throughout the day, you can tie it around your Coach crossbody’s strap.

Fancy Footwork

Let’s talk shoes. Firstly, it’s important to pack shoes that aren’t too heavy. Also, consider their versatility based on where you’re going. A great pair of neutral-coloured flats, two cool pairs of casual sneakers, and two pairs of evening shoes for those nights out on the town should do just fine. If you’re beach bound, then replace those flats and evening shoes with two pairs of sandals. Plus, the less shoes you pack, the more space you have in your luggage to purchase more souvenirs (or in my case, more shoes).

Fit First: When I say fit, it’s about a couple of aspects, namely the weather and amount of walking you’ll do – breaking in new shoes is not the best during travel. So, purchase your shoes ahead of time and walk around the house in them, making sure they not only fit, but are also comfortable to explore in. Grab a few comfort in-soles and no-slip grips for the bottoms, if needed. Additionally, lay out your outfits with your shoes to ensure that they coordinate appropriately.

black heeled boots

Boots, Bloomingdale’s

Boots, Stuart Weitzman

High Heels, Farfetch

How to Style: If true winter weather without the snow is on your wishlist, then a great pair of boots is best. Looking for something rugged, yet chic? Go for the Legion boot by Jeffrey Campbell. If classic is more your style, then the bestselling Reserve by Stuart Weitzman belongs in your closet. And if you need a quick transition from day to night and want to give your boots a rest, then these Alexandre Birman platforms not only give proper support, but also keep your feet semi warm while remaining stylish.

Expert Tips To Run A Business

5 Expert Tips on How to Run a Business Seamlessly

Are you ready to take the entrepreneurial leap?

As the founder of a relatively new business, My Eco Souk, I’ve firsthand learned the realities of kickstarting a start-up. This past year has been surreal; starting a business from scratch and running it seamlessly is no child’s play. One must run a tight ship and ensure the smooth functioning of all matters. No matter what business you’re in, you will always have competition. At first, it can seem intimidating to face a saturated market.

That’s why it’s more important than ever in today’s business world to stand out from the crowd. With so many businesses vying for attention, making yours stand out from the rest can be difficult. However, if you’re committed and informed, no obstacle is big enough to put you off your path. Some key factors can help you run a business smoothly, and I am here to impart some important lessons to those who want to take the entrepreneurial leap. In my personal experience, here are the ones I treasure the most.

Tips To Run A Business

Tip 1: A Strong Team Is Your Backbone

A dedicated team of like-minded and appropriately skilled individuals is pivotal to the functioning of any organisation. This could be your core team, a council, or even volunteers/interns/regular employees. A team that will back you up no matter what and work to turn your vision into reality is necessary. It is not a battle to be fought alone, but a team effort.

Having a solid team of trusted individuals also allows various mindsets and ideas to flow and enter the discourse. It also increases chances of accountability as well as a division of workload. Moreover, having people to rely on can be significant while running a business, which may very well take a toll on a person’s emotional and mental well-being.

There are countless benefits of having an excellent team to fall back on. Your team’s combined skill set and knowledge can help you to overcome obstacles that you might feel insurmountable on your own. They can guide you to see things from a different perspective, which is invaluable. Most importantly, they remind you that the world is not on your shoulders and that all the burden is shared till the aspiration is realised.

Pro Tips for Running a Business

Tip 2: Execution Is Key

Businesses need to be unique and ready to adapt to the ever-changing market. Ideas are constantly circulating among those involved in running a relevant business. However, it takes more than just ideas to be successful. It is essential to have a concrete plan that is executed promptly and effectively.

A group of people who are good at generating ideas is excellent, but if those ideas are not turned into actionable plans, they will not amount to anything. Therefore, it is crucial for businesses to have great ideas and the ability to execute them properly. Execution brings a result – and the result, good or bad, can only add to your learning and experience.

As a leader, it is essential that you take charge and pick which ideas you want to bring to life. Discussing with your team is a key part of this process; make sure everyone knows your vision and considers their opinions. It’s also crucial that you don’t spend too much time mulling things over without taking action – every execution has value, even if the outcome isn’t what you initially hoped for.

Growing a Successful Business

Tip 3: Be Adaptive to Changes

While working through an idea, you might often realise that it is not exactly going as you envisioned. This is very common when it comes to implementing ideas. Reality is far removed from one’s ideals, and many adjustments must be made.

In cases like these, it is important to learn early on to take things in your stride. Not every plan is rigid, and not every process is set in stone. There are bound to be changes and last-minute decisions that might throw you off. What matters is to be flexible and grow around those changes instead of shrinking below their weight.

Accepting changes and working flexibly helps in the long run compared to being stubborn and sticking to a redundant way of doing things. Being ready and not letting inevitable bumps hamper your spirit will work out in your favour more than anything else.

Tips to Craft a Strong Business Plan

Tip 4: Networking Is Necessary

Networking is an essential component of any business endeavour. It allows for exchanging information, building relationships, and acquiring new skills and knowledge. Networking is not simply a process of acquiring new customers or clients; it is also an opportunity to learn about new platforms, resources, and strategies that can be used to grow your business.

By engaging in networking activities, you will gain a better understanding of your industry and the competition, and you will be able to build strong relationships with other professionals who can help you grow your business. In short, networking is an essential part of any successful business venture. The more you expand your network and interact with individuals across the spectrum, the more perspective and the more ideas it brings you.

It is also an excellent way to invite collaborations and build long-lasting partnerships that are enormously important to getting ahead in this field. Networking does not have to be delegated to employees or interns. Actively participating in it as a leader can convey that you are an involved and eager individual, willing to take the reins into your own hands when necessary.

Tip 5: Be Ready to Invest and Persist

Investing will be an integral part of your start-up. Ideas and execution require resources, and resources require money. Money and time will be key investments that you will have to gear up for while trying to make a business work – being patient is also necessary. Persistence is vital when it comes to investing. You cannot sow and expect to reap the next day. It will take time and understanding and, most importantly, faith.

People often invest large amounts of time and money in a particular idea, hoping for instant success and profit. My time in the field has taught me otherwise. The marketplace is often unpredictable, and being consistent is the only thing that will get you far enough to secure any sort of achievement or recognition.

In the one year I have spent as the founder of My Eco Souk, things have certainly not been a piece of cake. I have a long way to go before I can see myself as an established business owner. I will strive to learn and step out of my comfort zone. These were some of the treasured tips I gathered in the months that have gone by. Sharing it with fellow newbies in the start-up arena brings me immense joy because I also would have wanted someone to share these with me!

How to Merge Your Personal Style and Professional Persona

It’s easier than you think.

When it comes to branding yourself, it can often be confusing how to blend your personal style with your professional persona. But it doesn’t have to be. Here are my tips on how to fabulously fuse your personal brand with your profession.

Consider the Source

When shopping for ourselves, we often look to style icons, celebrities, or tastemakers for inspiration on the looks we want to achieve. However, when it comes to branding, it is suggested to take a page – not the entire book – from your favourite public figure by remembering that authenticity is key. Focus on pieces that speak to you; the idea is to be inspired, not an imitation.

And Just Like That

Sarah Jessica Parker, aka SJP, is known for her fashion and style influence. As an actress playing the iconic Carrie Bradshaw, her career as a lifestyle/fashion writer grants her the creative freedom to wear what she wishes, as well as the budget for a Hollywood wardrobe consultant. Not all of us are as lucky, so I say consider where you work and add a bit of flair accordingly with a pair of her famous pumps. And just like that, you too can look equally fabulous.

Lucille Pump High Heel

Lucille Pump High Heels, SJP By Sarah Jessica Parker

Fawn High Heels

Fawn High Heels, SJP By Sarah Jessica Parker

How to Style

The Windsor pump seems inspired by the blue Manolo Blahniks in season three’s infamous wedding scene, but, you can own a similar version for a fraction of the cost and still look incredible. Keeping your personal brand in mind, maybe the crystal buckle isn’t for you, but you still prefer a feminine element, so try the Lucille pump with a ladylike bow in the back.

Or maybe you’re a fan of the pump, but the colour doesn’t quite capture your personality, which may be a bit more subdued. For those whose style is straight to the point, I suggest giving the Fawn – a classic pump that comes in over 27 colours and prints – a go. While I understand the ease of access that comes with online shopping, I must suggest that you visit Level Shoes or one of SJP’s storefronts in Yas Mall (Abu Dhabi), Dubai Hills Mall, The Dubai Mall, or the concept store in Mall of the Emirates and test them out to see which pump truly fits your personality.

Consider the Context and Audience

What are you trying to say through your personal style? Do you want to be seen as trustworthy? Creative? Detail-oriented? What are the top three character traits you want people to perceive when they connect with you? And how can those be conveyed through personal style? Write down those three words and then pull pieces from your wardrobe that you feel identify with those words and why. Don’t feel like your wardrobe reflects those words too well? This goes back to brand messaging.

For example, House of Devereaux shares a brand philosophy with Harry Winston (“people will stare, make it worth their while”) and holds fast to the brand motto, “it’s all in the details”. The brand emphasises words like power, feminine, and detailed, and this is reflected through product offerings in bold and strong colours, elaborate trims, and fierce leopard print lining. When people see the brand designer in any blazer, they immediately associate those pieces with the brand and the personality and brand messaging of the designer, Dominique Devereaux.

Blending the Brand with Style

Style is only a piece of the personal branding puzzle, but it’s an important element, and you can begin with your wardrobe. There may be pieces or silhouettes that you are most comfortable in, like pants as opposed to dresses. Or maybe there is a pair of trousers you receive compliments when wearing. More importantly: do they make you feel comfortable and great when you wear them? Assess the fit and silhouette, and then allow those key pieces to be your focal point.

And if you look and feel good in them, don’t be afraid to buy them in every colour that suits you. Showing up authentically is always in style. It always leads back to authenticity. Being authentic in your style allows you and others to be clear about who you are and how you want to be perceived. This lets potential clients know that you take yourself and your brand seriously. Take a glance at the House of Devereaux brand board and how it implements key elements into products, services, and personal branding.

Consider the Industry

Not all industries are created equal, but that doesn’t mean you still can’t stand out in the presence of other professionals. Modest fashion is becoming increasingly modern and allowing flexibility through fashion. You can be respectful of the country and your company’s culture while not compromising your own personal style.

MODERN-ity Wear

Many brands are being birthed from this great country, emphasising modest modern wear. Take, for instance, Bouguessa’s Sheikha Long Trench in a gorgeous shade of green. It’s a classic cultural silhouette with a statement colour edge.

Sheikha Long Trench, Bouguessa

How to Style

I suggest wearing all black, as seen in the reference photo and a classic black pump like the aforementioned Fawn pump from SJP. Keep it neutral. Maybe your style is a bit more understated, but with a bit of drama. The Sara Shirt Dress, also from Bouguessa, gives you a modest length of lightweight cotton with flowy pleats and darting in the back.

Sara Shirt Dress Front

Sara Shirt Dress, Bouguessa

How to Style

This dress is easy – a statement shoe that you feel most fabulous in, be it pump or flat, can definitely work. White is one of the best neutrals, and every woman needs it in her wardrobe. Whether blouses, dresses, or your basics, you can never have too many white pieces. The Sara dress is also versatile as you can open it up and turn it into a duster by pairing it with an undershirt and trousers.

Consider the Casual

Maybe your industry doesn’t require professional attire to be so restrictive. You could be the owner of a yoga studio or wellness brand, but still want to appear more approachable. There are ways you can show up polished and reflect your personal style simultaneously.

Work for Sport

Athleisure has seen a real resurgence recently, with brands like Nike, Reebok, and Adidas creating looks that can leave the gym and casually transition into a meeting with like-minded colleagues. The details of this Adidas coat dress are playful and functional as the drawstrings bring in the waist, making it flattering for all body types.

Right on Target

American retailer Target is known for its affordable fashions and featured collaborations with major designers like Jason Wu and Altuzarra, as well as emerging fashion influencers like Kahlana Barfield Brown. While Target does not yet ship to the UAE, unfortunately, we can still aspire to wear athleisure looks with these pieces as the perfect inspiration. Check out how to get an inspired version of the look below.

Slip-on Runner Sneaker

Ralph Lauren Kacie Slip-on Runner Sneaker, Yoox

How to Style

Who doesn’t love the versatility of an oversized white button-down shirt? What makes the joggers and jacket combo even better is that each piece can serve as a base for other looks. You can wear the jacket with a great pair of denim, and the joggers with a lightweight top and trainers (like the black Ralph Lauren slip-ons or the Fawn pump from SJP). Did I mention that the nylon joggers are made from recyclable material?

Consider Yourself

The most important piece to the personal branding puzzle is you. Think about who you are, your body type, the colours that appeal to you, and whether those colours work for you. We, as women, are guilty of going to our closets and often saying that we have nothing to wear. In actuality, we need a fresh pair of eyes to evaluate what we already have, what we can work with, and what we may need to replace. This is where personal stylists and brand managers like myself come in. We help you to determine how to showcase your best self.

What Shape Am I?

Unclear on how to go about growing your personal brand? Consider your body type. Identifying what works for your shape and accentuates your best features will make styling yourself that much easier. No two women’s bodies are the same, so take some time and assess what shape you are.

How to Shapeshift

Spend an afternoon out and about, trying on things that are familiar to you and outside your comfort zone. Should you find yourself stuck in a style rut, you can always book a personal shopping/styling session with House of Devereaux.

What Colours Work for Me?

Not all colours are created equal, and it is best to identify what shades and tones work best for you. They assist with changing your mood and overall brightness, and can affect how approachable you appear to others. Want a colour change? Colour analysis is a service provided under the umbrella of professional branding services at House of Devereaux and can help you identify what works for you. Other women in the local industry specifically specialise in this service, like House of Colour.

From identifying your brand messaging to learning how to build a professional wardrobe to professional branding photos (all based on your personal style and tailored to your industry), House of Devereaux specialises in branding services that can take your brand to a new level. Establishing your brand message or even rebranding helps to have a feminine touch, so they work with Elle Laine, a professional photographer. She has extensive knowledge of branding and marketing.

Guide To a Successful Entrepreneurial Journey

Real Talk: What to Expect on the Entrepreneurial Journey

According to someone in the know.

There may never have been a better time in history to be an entrepreneur than now – especially in the burgeoning city that is Dubai. But starting your own business is no easy task, and most people tend to face several doubts and challenges along the process. Today, following the return of World Entrepreneurs’ Day celebrations on August 21, I share some of the most common things that I’ve come across throughout the start-up cycle.

“I feel like I want to start a business.”

The incessant impulse or that initial desire to create change in your life or the market, that lightning strike of creativity and innovation, or simply the passion to move a community forward – are all different versions of the same signal to me. It’s the signal that indicates a call to adventure. Honouring that call requires an act of courage and willingness to take a risk and venture into the unknown.

Tip: Search and create an honest inventory around that impulse. What is the deepest aspiration you have for your venture? Don’t be shy in vocalising and share the big dream, not just the intermediate steps towards it.

“Oh no, I just quit my job and I might fail!”

Overview of the Entrepreneurial Journey

The early stage of entrepreneurship is a vulnerable period. Fear, confusion, self-doubt, dissolution, and disappointment are all part of the starter package. For me, the only path through these feelings has always been to focus on work. Think action and forward motion. I don’t know any entrepreneur who hasn’t felt that way and, while some deal with it better than others, I was not one of them. My business career has had numerous regrettable encounters, but here I am, finally unscathed.

Tip: The marketplace is a busy and crowded space. However novel or noble your venture, success will almost always involve time, persistence, blind alleys, and wrong turns.

“Should I get a co-founder?”

I may be biased when it comes to this because all my business adventures have always involved co-conspirators. Not only did it help propel my ventures forward, but it also promoted a balanced attitude, thinking, and approach. There are, of course, drawbacks and considerations to founding teams. The wrong fit in a team will sink a venture faster than anything else. If you do not want a co-founder, you can achieve the same result through a variety of ways such as creating an advisory board or a board of directors, finding angel investors, or creating strong option plans for early-stage employees where applicable.

Tip: In the beginning stage, treat every relationship with extra care and attention. Partners, early clients, investors, and employees will have a significant impact on your growth. Make sure your values and visions are aligned and nurture those relationships.

“My business hit its first milestone!”

Make sure to enjoy the moment – but not for too long! As your business starts hitting its stride, your entrepreneurial role shifts towards a leadership role. As a leader, maintaining focus and discipline on what’s around the next corner is a priority.

Tip: As a business matures, the creative and energetic qualities of the entrepreneur can often become counterproductive. It’s important to be in tune with the needs of the business as it shifts towards administration, optimisation, quality, and performance.

Freelancer Permit

Depending on the country, there can be significant administrative overhead to building a business. It can come in the form of licensing, HR laws, data and privacy, taxes, and industry-specific legal requirements to name just a few. Most countries, however, distinguish between small businesses and large corporations, maintaining different thresholds of regulation depending on the size and maturity of the enterprise. In my experience, Dubai has some of the most start-up friendly culture and governance frameworks compared to other countries I have worked in.

Tip: Check out the Freelancer License. It’s a low-cost, low-risk way to explore the world of freelancing and a first step towards building a business.

“Someone wants to buy my business.”

Congratulations! You are at what investors refer to as “the exit”! It’s very useful to think about the end of your entrepreneurial story before even starting. It’s not necessarily something to plan for or focus on in the beginning, but it’s useful to keep at the back of your mind. It should also influence the types of choices you make early on as it will impact everything from branding to business strategy and corporate structure. Are you building something that will be franchised? Sold to a larger company? Is yours a social enterprise that will be handed over to a community board of trustees?

Tip: Not all businesses need to have an exit – some can be lifestyle and even generational. Whatever the end of the story, it’s worth considering the options before you start.

“Prepare for a journey, not a result.”

Prepare for a journey, not a result

When people ask me about my business, I generally speak about the journey – the people who I’ve met and worked with, and the places that I’ve travelled to. I don’t think my kids know a single one of my business accomplishments, and I like it that way. Having gone through a full start-up cycle from an idea hatched in a coffee shop to a global technology business, I get to now reflect on the experience, and it has inspired me to start a new adventure as a writer.

My first book Man in Motion captures love, wisdom, relationships, and creativity, all while trying to run a business and keep the lights on at home. When I look back and see where I am now, what I cherish most has been the freedom to succeed or fail, to make decisions and be accountable for their consequences, to explore the world, and live my own journey.
