Hollywood’s biggest night is undoubtedly the Oscars – all the stars come out to play, dressed in their glittering best. Who doesn’t remember a luminous Lupita Nyong’o in the palest blue Prada gown accepting her best supporting actress award in 2014? Or Julia Roberts rocking vintage Valentino in 2001? This year was no exception, with nominees and attendees showing off their style. Or, in a few unfortunate cases, lack thereof…
Here are our best and worst looks from the 2020 Academy Awards:
The best dressed
BILLY PORTER
The gilded feathery top, the platforms, the printed gown… we always knew Billy did not come to play, and this Giles Deacon Couture creation is just magnificent form.
ROONEY MARA
The queen of goth high fashion slays in custom Alexander McQueen, with her signature sleek, pulled-back hair and red lip complementing the delicate lace and intricate cutouts. When you know something works for you, stick to it.
CHARLIZE THERON
The face of Dior looking at her most Dior-est in a knockout old-Hollywood gown. She may not have won the best actress Oscar, but she channels glamour in spades.
SAOIRSE RONAN
This Gucci gown divided opinion but it’s true to Saoirse’s bold style – the actor has never been afraid of an unconventional high-fashion choice. She balances the tricky shape with simple hair and makeup, while the black block colour beautifully offsets to soft lilac skirt.
NATALIE PORTMAN
With her Dior cape featuring the delicately embroidered names of all the female directors the Academy overlooked this year, Natalie made a powerful fashion and political statement. The modern bob, nude lip and simple gold jewelry kept the focus on her statement of female solidarity.
The worst dressed
LAURA DERN
The Oscar was well deserved but the Armani gown was too much lamp shade, not enough award-winner.
GRETA GERWIG
Who knew Dior Haute Couture could be so boring? The olive green colour is an interesting choice but the curtain shape of the gown and ill-fitting bodice made it look old-fashioned.
KRISTEN WIIG
Kristen has never been afraid of taking a fashion risk and mostly, it pays off. This Valentino gown, however, is a giant miss, with the internet giggling that it looks like lasagna. Extra points for the leather gloves, though.
TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET
Timmy! You had one job! To look amazing on the red carpet. But this looks like the young star is ready to valet the cars, instead of presenting an award. The Prada tracksuit and tee combination was way too casual for the Oscars.
BEANIE FELDSTEIN
The bombshell waves and classic smoky eye are beautiful, but the Miu Miu dress… The retro style is pretty enough, but the black on white flower print is too distractingly busy.
