Once a favourite of school-aged children, the loafer is back in style for 2020, thanks to a drastic revamp. Moccasins, which were originally worn by Native Americans, inspired the classic loafer shoe, which was designed by a Norwegian and traditionally had a flat or low heel. The shoe grew in popularity in 1930s America, when it was renamed the loafer.
In the 1960s, the design was refreshed, this time by Gucci, who added a brass strap detail. Around this time the loafer became increasingly popular among women as well as business professionals. Since then it has also become suited to casual wear.
Remaining a classic design ever since, in 2020 the loafer underwent a drastic revamp. Appearing on the runways of fashion powerhouses Louis Vuitton, Prada and Fendi, the loafer has made a comeback as slip ons and even as mules. Restyled with block heels, chunky soles and mixed textures, there are plenty of trending options to choose from.
Wear your mules on a casual weekend with a pair of jeans, match with a power suit to the office or head out dancing in them. However you wear them, mules are one of the most versatile pieces of footwear, and comfy too! One pair that caught our eye this season is from Asos Design. Half loafer, half mule, this coffee and terracotta pair is elegant, chic and stylish. Here are three different outfits we’ve put together to help you rock this season’s (and possibly this year’s) number one shoe trend.
