How to Style Yourself Like a Fashion Editor

With a few small stylist’s tweaks, you can make any outfit look fashion-week ready.

FASHION TRICK 1: THE SLEEVE PUSH UP

Jacket sleeves down – another boring day at the office. Sleeves pushed up just so – hello, front row! The coolest way to wear your blazer is by nonchalantly pushing up the sleeves, but did you know there’s a secret little trick to keeping them from sliding down? Simply place a hair tie or elastic over the sleeve above your elbow, and bunch the sleeve up around it. Done!

FASHION TRICK 2: THE BELT KNOT

This one is so easy to pull off yet makes your entire outfit look more considered. Instead of matching your belt to your trousers and just threading it through the loops, tie a contrasting colour belt around your waist and slide the long loop underneath and through to form a fashionable knot.

FASHION TRICK 3: THE HIGH-LOW MIX

Every fashion editor knows the secret to always looking as if you’ve just stepped off Rodeo Drive: mixing high street items with statement pieces. Don’t just keep your favourite standout piece for special occasions – be it a spectacular skirt, an eye-catching bag, or a fancy silk scarf – make it the focal point of your outfit, paired with simple whites, denim or neutrals.

FASHION TRICK 4: TONAL DRESSING

Look to the Kardashians for a masterclass in tonal dressing, where you wear one colour family in different shades. It may look intimidating but works with any solid colour you would normally wear as a neutral. Think camel with beige, caramel, and tan. Or various shades of dark blue, maroon, or emerald green – the options are limitless.

FASHION TRICK 5: MISMATCHED JEWELRY

If you don’t have time to put a fashion-week outfit together, you can still up your style stakes with a subtle accessories tweak. Matchy-matchy is so last season – stack up your jewelry in all their mismatched glory. Different earrings in each ear? No problem. Gold watch with silver bangles? Go for it. Stacked rings? Yes, please!
