The 5 Step Guide To An Easy Juice Cleanse

Thinking of trying a juice cleanse? While juicing should never replace a balanced diet, there are ways to get your juice fix the healthy way.

Rarely a day goes by without a snap of a celeb holding onto their green juice for dear life. From supermodels such as Gisele Bündchen and Alessandra Ambrosio to actors Blake Lively and Jessica Alba, it seems the stars just can’t get enough of the green stuff. And the orange stuff. And the purple stuff. In fact, whatever colour their juice – you can guarantee they’ll be guzzling it down.

Why? Well, for a start, juicing is a great way to load your body with vital antioxidants, nutrients and minerals. This helps boost your immune system, allows your organs to function better and gives you that gorgeous glow from the inside out. Sounds pretty great, right? Before you go placing an order to embark on a juice cleanse, there are a few things you need to know:

1. Go for cold-pressed juices

This means the juice has been extracted from your fruit and veg without exposing them to heat, which strips them of the good stuff such as enzymes, vitamins and proteins. This also ensures your body digests and processes the nutrients more effectively. Win-win.

2. Opt for organic

And ideally local and sustainably sourced. Nasty pesticides aren’t going to do you any good while you try to live healthier – and you’ll be doing your part for the planet, too. If you’re not using organic fruit, always peel them first.

Top tip: if you’re a caffeine fiend or you eat a lot of sugar, cut down the week before you cleanse. This will help prevent cravings and withdrawal headaches.

3. Watch out for high fruit content

Your juices should be made up of at least 60% vegetables – otherwise they can pack a serious sugar punch. Read the ingredients carefully!

4. Include the peel

If you’re making your own juices using organic fruit, include the peel, as that is where most of the nutrients are packed. You can safely include the peels of apples, pears, bananas, cucumber, eggplant, kiwis, watermelon, ginger, peaches, nectarines and plums, but avoid citrus, mango and pumpkin peels.

5. Never juice long-term

Juice cannot replace a healthy, balanced diet that includes plenty of fiber, protein and lean fats. Juicing should complement your food plan, not replace it.
