Your skin takes a battering during the day, what with UV rays, pollution, makeup, air conditioning and dirty phones always messing with your perfect-skin vibe. That’s why you need to treat it right at night, with a proper routine and some pampering. So where does a night cream come in, and should you use one? We answer all your questions.
Do you need a night cream?
Yes. Your skin doesn’t “sleep” at night or “repairs” itself at night – your skin can’t tell the time and doesn’t have an on/off switch. It works 24 hours a day. The reason we use more active ingredients and richer creams at night is because that is when your skin is cleanest and clearest, with no sunlight or pollution bombarding it. That means you can give it the proper care it deserves, without having to worry about protecting it.
What is the difference between night and day creams?
Day creams are lighter and designed to work with other products on your face, like sunscreen and makeup. Night creams will usually be richer and thicker.
What ingredients should you look for?
You should choose a moisturiser for your skin type, not your skin condition – that’s what serums are for. So if you have dry skin, look for a hydrating night cream with hyaluronic acid; if you have oily skin, use an oil-free cream.
Where in your routine do you apply a night cream?
Right at the end, after double cleansing, toning and applying your serum. Think of moisturiser as your final coat of protection that seals everything in and keeps your skin hydrated and shielded.
Should your night cream be expensive?
Not necessarily – serums are where you should invest your money, since they treat skin conditions like aging, blemishes or pigmentation. Choose a night cream that fits into your budget and suits your skin type.
